Welcome to Mama in the Margins…

“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined.”
Henry David Thoreau

Hi, there. If you’ve found my page, you’re likely a supportive loved one, and I thank you for visiting. If you are not, however, please allow me to introduce myself…

I am Greer Crabtree Crain, a married, mother of three. A stay-at-home mom, student, and currently an in-home childcare provider. All of these things I love and give all of my attention… until nap time. Like most busy moms, nap time is my chance to shine! What does it mean to shine? To me it means chasing a lifelong dream of becoming a well-known author…

Now that we have made it through the formal introduction, let’s get to the nitty gritty. I am the type of person who hates small talk. I want to know the stuff that matters, you know? I’m quick to make friends, and I love hearing your story. So, in light of that, I’m going to shoot it straight with you here. I’m treating this blog somewhat like a filtered journal (because let’s be real, the internet doesn’t need to know the unfiltered thoughts). This is going to be an ongoing journey of navigating motherhood (my oldest is only five, so I’m still new to this!), and learning the balancing act that is finding yourself again after the deep trenches of early motherhood.

As women, it’s all too common to lose ourselves in serving others. It is in our nature, and most of the time we serve them happily. I’ll be honest, as a young girl, there was nothing I wanted more than to be a mom. I have a great mom, and the fun we had together made me look forward to being a mom. She never made me think that caring for me was the labor of love it was. Now I’m a fun mom, and I LOVE it. As most moms know, it is the most fulfilling thing we will ever do. However, with great love comes great sacrifice. Mostly to our health, both mental and physical. The decline is real and FAST! But now that our youngest is nearing two years old, I am finally carving out some ‘mom time’ and honoring the part of me that I had hidden so well. Nurturing the artistic call that lives within me.

I love to write, creating my own world and bringing it to life. Telling stories feels second nature to me. It feels good to sit down at my laptop, or even sometimes with a notepad and pen, and get all my thoughts out. Creative, constructive, or whatever it may be, it’s so rewarding. It heals the little part of me that was lost in those sleepless nights, the feedings, the diapers and the vomit. Between writing and exercising, I honor myself, and it’s working. I feel great!

So, to the other moms or dads (I know you guys feel it to!) out there reading my blog, this is your first homework assignment. Get out there and do something for yourself. Carve out the time, whether it’s five minutes or five hours. Find what makes your soul sing- only for you- and DO IT! Whether that’s a hike through the woods or a walk in your garden. Maybe you love to doodle, or perhaps baking is your outlet. Hell, you might be good at making balloon animals! Whatever sparks your creative flame, make sure to treat that time as the necessity it truly is.

until next time, ladies & gents~
